Things to Do In Hilton Head – Proposal Edition!
One of the best things to do in Hilton Head is to get engaged! Are you are thinking about proposing to the love of your life and are looking for a memorable way to do it? There’s no better way to do it than on your own private Hilton Head Boat Tour! In this article Captain Neil of Hilton Head Boat Charters shares his favorite tips and tricks on how to pull off the perfect proposal.
Over the past few years, we have had the privilege of being part of some of the most magical parts of people’s lives, their proposals! There is no higher honor for us than to be trusted on such a special occasion. To be a part of that moment and know that you have helped a couple create an unforgettable memory is absolutely priceless.
But there’s a lot of planning that goes into these things – and a whole lot of nerves as well. The nerves we unfortunately have no cure for, but planning and making sure everything goes smoothly, that’s our specialty. So, let’s talk through how it all comes together.
Step 1 – Give Us a Call
Feel free to check out our website www.hhiboatcharters.com and get to know us a little bit. From there – the best thing to do is give us a call and chat things through and make sure that we are the right match. On our call we can talk through your vision of how you would like it to happen and what you are picturing in your mind. From there, we will make any one of a number of suggestions on a few secluded spots, determine contingency plans, and general timing. There are so many amazing places here on Hilton Head, finding the right spot for your magic moment will be a piece of cake.
Step 2 – The Ruse
This is the fun part; we can get as creative as you want here. Some of the more interesting things that we have helped plan?
Advance Recon
This soon to be groom asked us if we could drop off one of his friends to the remote beach where he was going to propose. What we didn’t know is that his friend was a drone pilot. Once we learned the plan, we made sure that we marked the exact spot to frame the shot with a piece of driftwood on the beach. When the time came, everything came together seamlessly. His fiancé didn’t hear the drone or even know it was there.
The Fake Photo Shoot
This was our most recent proposal. We had a group of four charter with us and everyone was in on the proposal except the bride to be. She thought that she was helping us by being part of a photo shoot for our boat charter service. We took them to a remote sandbar for the proposal.
After touring around a little bit and seeing a few dolphins, our sandbar was in sight. Once we had run the boat up on the beach, they walked with their feet in the water along the beach and we captured a few low angle images. We also took a few photos front of the boat just to make it feel legit. Once we were done with the last shot, we asked for just the groom and his soon to be fiancé for a quick photo of just them. Right at that moment, he dropped to one knee for the proposal – and we were rolling video the whole time.
Our accomplices on the fake photo shoot also had 15 of their closest friends and family waiting for them at the dock on our 20 passenger boat. The newly engaged couple had no idea that this was happening and were completely blown away having all of their closest friends there waiting there for them and sharing the moment. The sunset cruise we took them on was nothing short of spectacular.

Oklahoma!
Our very first proposal was certainly a memorable one. I had a couple on a sunset cruise and in advance of their charter, I talked to the groom to be who was proposing and ironed out a code word “Oklahoma”. I would use it when I was in the right spot for the proposal.
About 30 minutes into our trip we reached the perfect spot and the big moment was upon us. I brought the boat to idle speed and the groom completely forgot to wait for the code word and quickly popped to one knee. It was actually pretty amazing, and he hit it out of the park, I just wasn’t running video for the first 5 seconds of the proposal #nerves.
Step 3 – Capturing the Event
The final piece of the puzzle is figuring out how you want to capture the proposal. There are definitely options here:
- The most popular of which is that the captain’s capture it on our cell phones as it happens.
- Another option that has become increasingly popular is having a professional photographer on board. This is how we pulled off the “Fake Photo Shoot” engagement. We’ve successfully executed this multiple times.
- Drone video accompanied with on the ground photos that we capture on our cell phones. We don’t supply drones or pilots, but we will help pull it all together for you.
