Best Time to See Dolphins in Hilton Head

When is the best time to see dolphins in Hilton Head?

By Neil Arlett

If you’ve ever asked, “When’s the best time to see dolphins around Hilton Head?” you’re not alone. I get this question when people call to book their tours. and I’ve got great news for you: There’s never a bad time to go dolphin watching here on Hilton Head.

That said, there are definitely some windows during the year and day where your chances of an unforgettable experience go way up. After thousands of  private dolphin cruises in Hilton Head  here’s what I’ve learned from a captain’s-eye view.

Dolphin Season: When Are They Most Active?

We’re lucky to have around 200 resident Atlantic bottlenose dolphins in Hilton Head’s waters all year long. But from May through September, that number can roughly double.

In the summer months, you’d practically have to wear a blindfold not to see them. That said, we’ve never run a single one of our HHI dolphin tours tourwhere we didn’t spot our flippered friends.. Rain or shine, morning or evening, they’re out there.

Morning vs. Afternoon Tours: Which Is Better?

This one’s interesting because conventional advice says early morning or late afternoon is the best time to see them.  And while that is true, one of the other things that I have learned, is that the changing tides also can affect where our dolphin friends are hanging out. We know all of the best spots to spot them at flood and ebb tide, so all you need to do is sit back and soak in the lush lowcountry landscape.

One quick note, you will often get great visibility during the golden hours—early morning and just before sunset. That softer light not only makes for better photos, but it also makes it easier to spot dorsal fins breaking the surface.

Weekday Tours: The Local Advantage

Want to feel like you’ve got the water to yourself? Weekday bookings for our Hilton Head Island dolphin tour is the way to go.

On Saturdays, most vacationers are either checking in or checking out. Sunday is beach day. But come Monday to Friday, it’s  definitely not as busy out there. . Sometimes we’ll get out into the backwaters and won’t see another boat for 15-20 minutes.  Fewer boats means less noise, less wake, and more natural dolphin behavior.

Where the Dolphins Are (And Yes, I’ll Spill Some Secrets)

I won’t give away all my spots—but here are a few dolphin hot zones we often cruise through:

  • May River where it meets the Intracoastal waterway
  • Skull Creek by the entry of Port Royal Sound
  • Calibogue Sound
  • Broad Creek where it meets the Calibogue Sound

These areas give us the flexibility to spot dolphins no matter what the tide or time. Because we travel 18 to 20 miles per tour, we cover more water  than pretty much all of our competitors. .

More water  = more dolphins..

Do Weather Conditions Matter?

The conditions that we find can really impact dolphin visibility are wind and waves.

  • Calm day? You can spot dolphins from a mile away.
  • Decent – strong wind opposing the tide? That’s when we get choppier water, which makes it harder to catch those quick fin sightings.

But cloudy or rainy  days? No problem.. Honestly, I’d rather be out on a boat in the rain  than in a grocery store in the sun.

What Other Wildlife Can We See on a Hilton Head Dolphin Cruise? Wildlife Beyond Dolphins

If you’re out during the summer, keep your eyes peeled for more than dolphins. We regularly spot:

  • Stingrays popping  out of the water
  • Bald eagles, pelicans, egrets, blue herons and beyond.  We have more than 30 species of birds here in the low country
  • If we are really lucky, we might even see  the occasional sea turtle

Every day on the water brings something new, and no two tours are ever exactly the same

Want to Know My Favorite Dolphin Moments?

It’s when we stop and cut our engines. Imagine, no boat noise, all you hear is the sound of birds in the distance, the waves lapping up against the boat’s hull, and you are fully immersed in the glory of nature.  Now imagine that you are proximate to a pod of dolphins slowly going about their business.  When they break the surface you can hear them individually breathe. Those are the moments that we live for, and the lifetime vacation memories that we want to create for all of our guests.
